These past few weeks have been wild, to say the least. As a dark-skinned black woman in America my emotions have been all over the place ranging from anger, frustration to sadness, and then cycling back through to anger. The one glimmer of positivity through this time has been the outpouring of support that I’ve seen towards black-owned brands. With that, I wanted to share some beauty brands that are black-owned that I’ve loved over the past few years!
UOMA Beauty. The founder of this incredible brand, Sharon Cuter, started the #pullup orshutup movement which is asking beauty brands to turn their solidarity into action within their own companies. This brand epitomizes all that I love about working in the beauty industry and beauty in itself. I’ve loved everything that I’ve tried within the line but especially recommend their woke concealer. It’s full coverage and brightens up my under eye!
Mented. This brand was founded by two black women who created their products to fit any skin tone. I’ve loved their foundation stick but I recently bought their nude lipsticks which were their first product launch and can’t wait to receive it and put it on! I typically prefer bolder lip colors but Mented’s cruelty-free and vegan lipsticks shades will make me a nude lip convert!
TGIN. I went completely natural six years ago and have tried almost all the natural hair brands. I’ve stuck with TGIN for the past three years due to the fact their products not only work amazingly but because the founder’s journey is truly inspiring. My favorite product is the argan replenishing oil. It’s the best smelling oil I’ve ever used and it seals my ends beautifully!
Prime Beauty Cosmetics. I got introduced to this brand through a Nyma Tang video where she was looking for a bronzer for her skin tone. I immediately bought the aptly named BROWNZER in chocolate litty and it’s been a staple on my makeup table ever since! If you’ve always struggled to find a bronzer, run don’t walk to prime beauty!
Beauty Bakerie. I got introduced to this brand through Jackie Aina (Jackie, Jackie, Jackie, Jackie,!) and you guessed it, I’ve loved it ever since! I love that the brand is a fun play on all things baked! The first time I played with Csshmere’s (the founder) products, I spent two hours deciding what to get! I’ve loved the liquid lips the most and have repurchased multiple times! Highly recommend if you love liquid lips.
The Lipbar . I first saw this brand at Afropunk and was completely smitten! It was the first vegan and cruelty makeup product I’d bought and I’ve loved every vegan makeup purchase since. The brand was founded by Melissa Butler, who along with a background in finance, started making lipsticks in her kitchen because she believed beauty shouldn’t compromise health and was determined to change the way people thought about beauty. I really really love every single lip product from this brand and couldn’t recommend it highly enough!
Black Opal. This was a staple in my older sister’s makeup bags. It was also one of the very few brands that catered to darker skin tones that you could find in stores like Walmart and target twelve years ago. The brand has come such a long way and now carries so many incredible products at such an affordable price! I love their blush in Raisin and buy it every winter because it’s a staple!
Fenty. Need I say more? On top of turning the beauty industry on its head with an inclusive array of shades when the brand launched, Rihanna is the epitome of a badass black beauty creator. She showcases that she cares for black women with every launch and I’ve BEEN here for it. My favorite Fenty products is the gloss bomb in Hot Chocolit and a freestyle highlighter in Penny4uThots! God, I love Rihanna!
Grace Eleyae. I stumbled upon this brand in looking for a beanie or headwrap that wouldn’t rip up my edges. I had a great experience ordering from Grace and got a lovely followup note post-purchase. She founded her namesake brand on the belief that you should never have to choose between hair care and style. I’ve loved my cap and continue to wear it even in 70-degree weather so I highly recommend this brand!
Black Girl Sunscreen. It feels like I’ve been on the hunt for a sunscreen that is invisible on dark skin for what feels like my entire life. I finally found success in this brand which was founded for melanin women to have a sunscreen brand that caters exclusively to them. I was so happy to see that Target now carries this brand and immediately purchased! If you’ve never been truly happy with your sunscreen, grab this asap because not only does it do what it says, it was specifically made for dark-skinned babes!
Following from my post on my favorite brands for dark skin foundation, are there any other black women-owned beauty brands that you’ve tried and loved?
